The Role


Our Data Science team is seeking an experienced commodity crop Agronomist with an interest in biotechnology, genomics, and soil health. You will be working closely with the Soil Science and Agronomy Lead to execute field trials improving and proving the utility of Pattern Ag products. You will be working in support of diverse teams, assisting in pre and post-sales support as a scientific resource, collecting data, and forming research partnerships with select clients, researchers, and extensionists. 


This role will involve significant travel throughout major crop-growing regions of the United States and substantial time remote from the main office in California. We are looking for someone with a strong can-do mentality, internal motivation, communication skills, a desire to improve decision-making processes for crop field managers, and willingness to integrate into a tight-knit team solving on the ground challenges. Startups are quick-paced and data-focused, so a love of problem solving and being a part of an evolving research program is a must. 

Research and Development

  • Execute research plans defined by the Agronomist Lead.

  • Follow and transmit company protocols to partners, as identified by Operations lead.

  • Audit partners with face-to-face touchpoints as necessary.

  • Manage relationships with key researchers, as directed by the Agronomist Lead.

Pre-Sale Support

  • Serves as an agronomic scientific resource to the sales team, as directed by Commercial Lead.

  • Work cross-team to develop the documentation and resources that demonstrate and communicate the value proposition of Pattern Ag products, and address customer questions.

Post-Sale Support

  • Coordinate with Sales and Commercial Operations on customer sample collection efforts.

  • Support the sales team on delivering the product to customers, providing technical knowledge of diseases and agronomic interventions.

  • Work as the integration between Agronomy and the sales team to help identify opportunities to increase customer success and grow acreage.

We're looking for someone who has:

  • Masters in Agronomy, Crop Science or similar field

  • 2+ years of experience in agronomic field research or technical sales

  • Experience in planning, design, execution and data management of small plot or on-farm experiments.

  • Deep understanding of row crop systems and key agronomic decisions and inputs: crop protection, hybrid/variety selection, soil fertility, and precision management.

  • Exceptional data and file organization, spreadsheet management skills and willing to work with project management software, Slack, and cloud storage systems.

  • Strong communication skills both in the technical aspects of your work and in team settings.

  • Experience authoring white paper publications on agronomic topics.


Nice to haves:

  • Live in IA, IL, or Central/Midwestern United States

  • Soil science is a plus

  • Familiarity with principles of data analysis and statistical analysis of controlled experiments (ANOVA, linear regression, hypothesis testing)
